Sheffield were off the mark quickly after just 2 minutes as Neto’s blocked shot fell into the path of Didici to slot through the goalkeepers legs.

The lead was doubled just 2 minutes later as Neath and Didici combined well for Neath to fire low and hard under the keeper.

Liverpool pulled a goal back following a corner as a shot from the edge of the area deflected off Harrison and into the back of the net.

Minutes into the second half Sheffield grabbed their third goal of the game. A lovely lobbed pass from Neath for Hollingsworth to finish on the volley.

A pinpoint long diagonal pass from Hollingsworth found the head of Gunter, who headed off the bar and in, to give Sheffield a 3 goal advantage.

Wildey made a number of impressive saves as Liverpool began to pile on the pressure as they looked to mount a comeback, eventually cutting Sheffield’s lead to just 1 goal.

Mellor placed the fifth goal into the empty net as Liverpool continue to press to search for the equaliser, only for Didici and Mellor to break with the counter attack.

A sweet strike from Hollingsworth following a Neath corner wrapped up the 3 points for Sheffield.

Head coach Adam Oldham speaking after the game:

“Overall I was pleased with our first game together as a team. We played against an organised Liverpool team who caused problems all afternoon. We fielded a very inexperienced team, some had never played a competitive game. The boys started well and as the game went on we showed some good play. I couldn’t really ask much more, I am more than happy with the first performance of the season. It's going to be a long season and we will look to compete in every game. The league is tough this year and most of the teams we are up against have years on us. So we will work every week to compete and learn. It's going be an exciting one.”
