Dr. Daniel Berdejo-del-Fresno Interview

Dr. Daniel Berdejo-del-Fresno spoke to us following his appointment as new Head of Futsal Philosophy & Coaching Methodology.

Berdejo-del-Fresno rejoins the club after a 4 year absence and is excited about the future of the club, stating the vision of the club is what attracted him back.

During the interview the Spaniard spoke about the following points.

HOW IT CAME ABOUT

Adam Oldham called about 9-10 months ago to tell me he was going to take over Sheffield FC Futsal. Since then, calls and conversations were more often and often. We were talking about plans, how to fix things, players, etc. For me, it was a privilege that a player like Adam was asking me. First, because I was helping, giving advice and mentoring a former great player that it is my friend. Second, because I could help Sheffield FC Futsal to be where I think the club deserve to be. Everyone knows that Sheffield FC Futsal is in my heart. They were the first ever club to hire me as Head Coach/Manager and together we achieved things that we could not think we would achieve. Those 2 seasons (2012-2014) were amazing and I never enjoyed coaching as much as I enjoyed there until last season with Bay Area Futsal Club in California. I think both projects have similarities: we started from scratch, we developed very well to achieve things that we dreamt and most importantly we become a family within the team.

TAKING UP THE JOB

The more we (Adam and I) spoke about Sheffield FC Futsal, the more I was getting involved. Finally, the Club offered me the position of Head of Futsal Philosophy & Coaching Methodology, and I could not reject it. The circle was closed. I was coming back to Sheffield FC Futsal 4 years after my departure. I was going to join a completely different club but still with some friends there (Adam, Thomas and Ollie). The aspect that most attracted me was the new vision. At Sheffield FC Futsal we are not looking to get promoted to the Super League, but establish the club, increase the number of teams, increase the number of kids playing futsal under the Sheffield FC Futsal academy, bringing futsal into the schools, developing futsal coaches in our way of understanding futsal… as you can see. We are talking about the long-term plan and vision. We have a plan for the next 5-10 years. We know what we want, where we want to be in 10 years time and have the plan to do it. Time will tell us if we are on the right pathway or not, but now the City of Sheffield again has  a futsal club with a clear vision for the future.

SHARING THE VISION

Therefore, we are here, putting a plan together and delivering a Futsal Coaching Seminar in January since we believe good coaches will create good players. Good coaches that believe and share Sheffield FC Futsal’s vision. This is the key. We want coaches that feel that our vision is their vision. For me it will be my first seminar in Sheffield, something pretty special personally. Only my second one in England after the one I delivered in April 2017, something interesting after being living in the country for 8 years. It will be an opportunity to share this vision, my vision, my experience around the world and lately in USA, my experience creating a futsal club in California and starting from zero, but also and the most important thing to come back to the amazing city of Sheffield and to see, visit, catch up, laugh and eat with very good friends that I left behind in England when I left in 2016.
